From 2005-2007 I was head of design for a 26-episode animated series called Kika & Bob. I also created the original character designs.
Written by feature film directors Vincent Bal and Colette Bothof, the series follows the two main characters on a wild journey across the globe, finding an entirely new and exciting location on their path in each episode.
For the viewers each episode is a little surprise party, and an educative one too. They learn useful and unuseful facts about the countries and their often weird inhabitants.
For the production team it was also a bit of a wild journey, since “travelling” to 26 different locations actually means “not going anywhere for a while”.
Some facts: over 4000 design assets were made, including more than 200 character designs. A total of 18 designers worked in my team (of which 4 at some point from their desks abroad). A collective 23 nervous breakdowns were reported, of which approximately half related to off-model animation and the other half to insufficient coffee supply.
Below is a selection of work I’ve done, including pre-storyboard sketches, color scripts, character designs and key backgrounds. For the sake of entertainment value I have left out several Excel sheets with scene breakdowns, quota and design briefings (which was the less stimulating part of my job and ironically, of course, also the most time consuming).
