Pictoplasma 2010

FonsSchiedon_Pictoplasma2010

The good people at Pictoplasma commissioned me for this year’s festival opening titles and visuals. An honour and a pleasure. In fact so much, I will refrain from making the horrible pun stringing together the festival name and the word StereoScoPIC.
Above is the first image, more coming soon.
Obligatory iconography: 3dglasses-iconand reference (cool rating: ********/5).

The festival takes place April 9 and 10 in Berlin. For those of you considering to go, there’s a very attractive early bird offer active now. Speakers include Fluorescent Hill and Peter de Sève (Ice Age, Finding Nemo).

True Self group show

I’m participating in the group show True Self, curated by Gary Baseman, opening on October 24th at the Jonathan Levine Gallery.
The work, made especially for this show, is a 60×80 cm (23.6 x 31.5 inch) oil on canvas.
Pictured below, is a square centimeter sample.

Room with a view

kotti

The desk of Fons Schiedon…has a new view. Overlooking the south-Kreuzberg area of Berlin, I now get a daily treat of ridiculously colorful sunsets and the smell of sizzling grill meat. Great! More! Distraction!
Ooh, butterfly

Bookshelf material

fig A “Stack”

A couple of publications (fig. A) kindly featured my work in the past few months.
By no means would I want to single out any of these lovely publications, but I’d like to single out one in particular.

Prepare for Pictopia
is the catalog published on the occassion of the Pictopia” exhibition at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, past March. It’s a beautifully produced book with excellent reproductions of the works in the exhibition, as well as a rich selection of essays and articles. These texts (by writers including artist Paul McCarthy and researcher Brian R. Duffy) provide an understanding of the historic evolvement of the topic of figuration and the broader cultural context the works are part of. I’m very humbled to be part of this publication, it’s the best you can get on the topic.

Before in place; earlier in time

“Pretty big sort of abstract paintings and a video installation.”

Exhibition of new work: March 17-April 5 at LODOWN “Gallery Westberlin”.

This is the second show of paintings by Berlin based artist Fons Schiedon. Earlier works depicted a visual aesthetic of instantly recognizable cartoon elements, employing a visual treatment inspired by the techniques of animated film. Parts of this approach remain, while the work moves further away from a strictly figurative appearance.

The paintings in this exhibition are complex compositions that seem to exist at more than one moment in time, in more than one place at a time. Materialising fragments of warped memories and detached associations, time is not only a subject, but the works themselves act as a time capsule recording the process of painting. In an intuitive mudfight, these are assembled by overpainting the canvas many times, embracing unforseen changes and incidents as the image gradually takes on its final form.

LODOWN “Gallery Westberlin”
at Brunnenstr. 56, 13355 Berlin-Wedding, Germany
vernissage: TUESDAY 17.03.09, 19.00-24.00h until 5.04.09

The art of Kika & Bob

Tomorrow, a petite exhibition dedicated to the production art of Kika & Bob, opens at the Printgallery in Antwerp. It has sketches, storyboards, backgrounds and model sheets showing the various locations and broad cultural diversity (so very accurately) portrayed in this series. All the production art can be purchased as giclée print reproductions.

Cut&Paste call for subjects to be worshipped

Cut&Paste is a tournament that puts designers on a stage with a Wacom to design in front of a live audience. Now, if you think this sounds like a devastatingly unstimulating activity, behold how this event has the ability to boost the audience’s enthusiasm by throwing sponsored beer into the mix:

It’s an ego trip that would almost make you forget about the actual challenge involved: on a pretty tight deadline (15 or 20 minutes depending on the category) participants are asked to create a 2d image, 3d thing or motion piece. That’s no cookie! Finalists will go on to compete at the global championship in New York with prizes including 3d software and hardware from Apple and Wacom.

I’ll be one of the judges at the Amsterdam edition in April (in a jury alongside Ewoudt Boonstra (KesselsKramer), Dylan Griffith (MTV Networks), Rob Huisman (Director BNO), Jochem Leegstra (Staat,) Tim Phillips (Glassworks) and Andrew Watson (Amsterdam Worldwide) among others).
And since it is my belief that nobody is a loser, just imagine what this means to the chances of winning!
I don’t know either!

Call for participants here

New website

Welcome to my new website. Perhaps nice to know, it is the seventh version of my site in the last decade. Besides the fact that this is the most basic and convenient site I’ve ever done, it is also the first to appear on the new url, which has my unpronouncable name in it.

New posts will appear on a regular basis. (ha ha). Supporting this ambition, the obligatory rss feeds are found in the menu on the right hand side and at the bottom of this page.
Also, I’ve been getting quite a few requests to provide some decent disclosure of my work (I guess as opposed to hiding it behind overly complicated self-invented interfaces). Therefor, this website should become a bit of an archive, which I’ll fill up in reverse order.

Hope you enjoy. Comments are open (please register as a user first ). Thanks.
