The good people at Pictoplasma commissioned me for this year’s festival opening titles and visuals. An honour and a pleasure. In fact so much, I will refrain from making the horrible pun stringing together the festival name and the word StereoScoPIC.
Above is the first image, more coming soon.
Obligatory iconography:
and reference (cool rating: ********/5).
The festival takes place April 9 and 10 in Berlin. For those of you considering to go, there’s a very attractive early bird offer active now. Speakers include Fluorescent Hill and Peter de Sève (Ice Age, Finding Nemo).

Above, is a poster designed as part of the publication/bag/catalog of “The Collectors”, the Danish and Nordic Pavillions exhibition at this year’s Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition concept is built around the topic of collecting, which on this poster is explored by presenting a collection of quotes about the nature of collecting, as told through the voices of “the Dandy”, “the Homeless” and “the Intellectual”.

Post Panic, the dutch production house celebrating their 12 year anniversary, moved into a new big (huge, grand, marvelous) office overlooking the Amsterdam harbour and a horizon gracefully embellished with fluffy cloud formations but other than that so clear you can practically see the shimmering reflections of a tidal wave of fortune heading over to flush the lower parts of the tiny country with goodness.
That’s the view outside though.
Looking inside, into an enormous two-level space, are several elements of various properties and different objects of distinguished characteristics. As you might expect. And on the first floor, just as you made your way up a staircase, is a wall. And that wall, has a picture on it that I made.

Last year, I’ve done a little character design for the Pictoplasma Character Collision Army, a Go-Kart derby in front of the Ministry of Environment during the Todays Art Festival in The Hague. The project was set up taking visual cues from military recruitment campaigns (I want you for..) and Mario Kart.
My pink hare was the face of one of three teams visitors could choose from, the two other teams racing under the flags of Motomichi Nakamura and Rinzen.
Although from the two versions above, the pumped-up Rambo bunny was generally prefered for its quirkyness, the right one was used, having a more direct appeal and providing a stronger contrast to the aggressive military context.

From 2005-2007 I was head of design for a 26-episode animated series called Kika & Bob. I also created the original character designs.
Written by feature film directors Vincent Bal and Colette Bothof, the series follows the two main characters on a wild journey across the globe, finding an entirely new and exciting location on their path in each episode.
For the viewers each episode is a little surprise party, and an educative one too. They learn useful and unuseful facts about the countries and their often weird inhabitants.
For the production team it was also a bit of a wild journey, since “travelling” to 26 different locations actually means “not going anywhere for a while”.
Some facts: over 4000 design assets were made, including more than 200 character designs. A total of 18 designers worked in my team (of which 4 at some point from their desks abroad). A collective 23 nervous breakdowns were reported, of which approximately half related to off-model animation and the other half to insufficient coffee supply.
Below is a selection of work I’ve done, including pre-storyboard sketches, color scripts, character designs and key backgrounds. For the sake of entertainment value I have left out several Excel sheets with scene breakdowns, quota and design briefings (which was the less stimulating part of my job and ironically, of course, also the most time consuming).

Group exhibition during Dutch Design Week 2006

Starting point for Copypaste History is the strong tradition of Dutch design in the 20th century. Well-known designs are the Fokker F27 Friendship, the clapskate and the BRO 27 couch by Martin Visser. They have become true design icons. However, we have entered the next century and there is a whole new generation of designers working their way up. Most of them are building directly or indirectly on the achievements of the 20th century. There is an enthusiastic display of sampling and assembling, translated into funny references and serious examples. It is exactly this kind of building on traditions that forms the heart of Copypaste History.
Therefore, MU has in association with Thijs Bakker and Annemarie Klijn challenged five young Dutch designers to come up with a contemporary translation of a Dutch design icon. Educated at a range of different design institutes and working in various disciplines such as food design, fashion, graphic design, product design, and multimedia, each of them has chosen an icon from the past 100 years and redesigned the product from their perspective. Brought together in one exhibition, the source of inspiration (or aversion, as every generation reacts against the previous one) and the designs for the new century are a special addition to what the Dutch Design Week 2006 in Eindhoven has to offer.
My contribution was based on the banknote design by R.D.E. Oxenaar and J.J. Kruit.
